Without question the most outstanding and coveted Grand Award of all the APS World Series Of Philately shows is the full size Kachina doll.
F. Burton “Bud” Sellers Memorial Grand Award
This Madden Kachina is carved by the noted Hopi artist K Dallas. It is from the personal collection of well-known collector and art dealer Gilbert Ortega and was purchased by a private collector at the auction of Ortega’s collection in 1995. The doll was recently purchased by The Arizona Federation Of Stamp Clubs for the year’s award. The Kachina, measuring 13.5” tall and 4” square at the base, is believed to have been purchased by Ortega for his private collection in the late 1970’s. . As a confirmation of the quality, note the wonderful cape work and is carved from a single piece of cottonwood root (except the base). Mr. Ortega valued this doll at $2,400.00.
